NEW DVLA 2019 number plates will launch this week in the UK.

Here’s how drivers could save themselves thousands off the price of a new vehicle.

A new year of registrations and will feature a ’19’ instead of the ’18’ and ’68’ of last year’s updates. Updated number plate registrations are introduced every six months in Britain. Motorists on the lookout for a new car may want to hold off until after this date to buy one so they can be one of the first to get their hands on the latest registrations.

New plates are introduced on March 1st and September 1st. The new 19-plate will be released on Friday and will apply to any new vehicle registered up until August 31st this year.

When new number plates come are introduced, they also provide an opportunity for motorists to make some savings when buying a car.

The reason for this is because dealers will have several pre-registered cars on their forecourts. Pre-registered cars are some of the best value cars on sale as they are essentially new vehicles which only tend to have a handful of miles on the clock. Dealerships will likely want to shift some of the pre-registered cars for a cut-price and you could make some savings because you would technically be the second owner.

When you do buy one of these cars you have less choice than you would if you specified a car yourself. You may not have a choice on the colour, trim, level or engine type as you would need to buy one of the cars the company has available.

However, you may strike lucky and get the car that you want or if you are flexible then you could get a bargain vehicle.

What does the number plate mean?

The first two letters of your car’s number plate represent where the car was registered. The first is the region and the second is the local DVLA office.

Next are two numbers which are the age identifier, which is changed every six months in March and September.

The final three letters are chosen at random and are what gives your number plate its unique identity.
